They rise out of the San Luis Valley floor — incongruous, vast, and almost impossible to contextualise until you are standing inside them. From a distance, they read as pure form. A geometry of shadow and light, indifferent to the scale of the mountains behind them.
Colorado Dunes was made in May 2019, at the hour when the shadows were long enough to define the geometry of the dunes without softening it. The result is an image that changes depending on how close you stand: from across the room, a landscape; up close, something closer to pure abstraction. Form for its own sake. Colour reduced to essentials: gold, shadow, air.
The muted palette — warm sand against a pale sky, deep shadows cutting the surface — sits quietly against almost any interior. It neither dominates nor disappears. It holds its ground.
This is one of the most spatially versatile works in the Kalava collection, and with an edition of 25 — the smallest of any print we offer — it is also among the rarest.
