The base walk around Uluru is 10.6 kilometres.
But the distance is not the point.
What the walk does — slowly, as the rock changes angle and the light shifts across its surface — is alter the relationship between you and the place you are walking beside. Uluru is not best understood from a distance, or from a lookout. It is understood gradually, on foot, through scale and time.
A Sacred Walk is a single photograph from that circumambulation — made on 6 February 2018, at a moment when the path curves and the rock face rises and the surrounding landscape opens. It holds something of what the walk actually feels like: the way the ancient material of the place presents itself without ceremony, expecting nothing.
Printed on Hahnemühle German Etching paper — textured, warm, with a surface that gives the impression less of something photographed and more of something rendered — the work carries a handmade quality that suits the subject.
This is a companion piece to the Vibrant Hues of the Heart series, made the same day. Where that series explores colour and breadth, A Sacred Walk is a single, quieter image: one moment from a walk that asked for attention.
